Blind teacher named presiding officer

The District Election Office has named Girish Kumar Srivastava,a teacher at the Government Inter College,Parade,as a presiding officer at a polling station for the Lok Sabha election. The problem is that he is blind since his birth.

Caught in an awkward position,Srivastava said: “I have been teaching Hindi at this college since 1983. The staff members are aware of my blindness and therefore,a mistake on their part is unlikely.”

He added that the form issued by the district election office included a column where one has to mention whether the concerned government employee applying for election duty is physically-challenged.

“The staff members who had filled my form had mentioned my blindness,” Srivastava said. Every day,Srivastava needs the help of his students to take him to the classroom and later drop him to the staff room. “Under such circumstances,it will not be possible for me to carry out election duty with full commitment. I have the required medical certificates to prove that I cannot see,” he said.

Srivastava had lodged a complaint with Additional District Magistrate (City) Shakuntala Gautam in this regard. “Instructions have been given to concerned officials to look into the matter and take required steps after an inquiry,” Gautam said.
