Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district Sunday arrested a 40-year-old BJP worker, Munna Bahadur Singh, for allegedly assaulting Lal Singh, a Dalit engineer with the Power Department, at his office following an argument. Police said Singh had gone to the engineer’s office on Saturday with his associates.

A video of the incident on social media purportedly shows the accused abusing and assaulting the victim with a shoe. On Sunday, police arrested Munna Bahadur Singh and produced him before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Ballia SP Omvir Singh said: “Police received information about the incident on Saturday afternoon, following which a team rushed to the office.”

Lal Singh told police that 20–25 people, led by Munna Bahadur Singh barged into his room and hurled casteist abuses at him. Police booked the accused and unidentified persons on charges including voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant. Police also invoked provisions of the SC/ST Act.
