Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Laxmikant Bajpai on Saturday expelled 124 workers in different districts from the party. They had either contested as rebel candidates or fielded their family members against BJP candidates in urban local body elections held in the state earlier this year. The workers will not be allowed to take BJP membership for the next six years.
According to a press release,46 workers have been expelled from the party in Gorakhpur region,followed by 41 in Braj,11 in Kanpur,10 in Awadh,9 in Pashchim and 7 in Kashi region.
Majority of those expelled are former corporators. These party workers had sought party ticket for elections of ward corporator in municipal corporations,Nagar Palika Parishads and Nagar Panchayats but the party had denied them symbol. These workers had then contested elections as independent candidates. Some of them had fielded their family members against BJP candidates.
During the municipal elections,the party had expelled 70 rebel workers who had contested in chairman elections in Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayats. The party had taken same action against two leaders who had contested mayoral polls as rebel candidates. Bajpai had expelled 334 workers last month.
