The overall pass percentage for Class 10 examinations conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Council (UP board) this year is 83.75 per cent nearly 13 per cent better than last year (70.82 per cent). This is the best performance for Class 10 in the last 12 years.
Board officials said it was yet to be ascertained whether this was the best performance ever.
Board secretary and director (Secondary Education) Vasudev Yadav said today that the healthy pass percentage was a result of the board adopting the 70:30 ratio for evaluating students.
The students were not burdened by theory too much, which carried weightage of 70 marks. The rest of 30 marks were awarded for project work given to the students throughout the year. They were not tense and it shows in the results, said Yadav.
As far as the performance in the last 10 to 12 years is concerned, this is the best. We are yet to go through records to say whether this is the best ever, said Vinod Krishna,Additional Secretary,UP board.
The pass percentage in 2001 was only 34.61 per cent, which improved to around 40 per cent in the next two years. In 2004,it went up to 70.61 per cent, reaching a high of 74.41 per cent in 2007. In order to prevent large-scale copying, the board used numbered answer papers to ensure they were not interchanged. This was done especially in 10 districts Allahabad,Kaushambi,Hathras,Aligarh,Etah,Azamgarh,Mau,Ballia,Ghazipur and Deoria which had become notorious for mass copying.
