Gymnast Ashish Kumar was accorded a warm welcome in his hometown Allahabad on Wednesday. People showered flower petals on Ashish and his coach DK Rathore. They danced on the beats of the dhols and distributed sweets.
Ashish received the Arjuna award from Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken in New Delhi on Tuesday after arriving in India from Belgium where he participated in the Artistic Gymnastics Challenger Cup.
Talking to The Indian Express,Ashish said,I am overwhelmed by the welcome given by the people of Allahabad. I am here for a week after which I will be attending the camp. I really want to win a medal at the World Championships to be held at October in order to secure a berth in the Olympics.
Ashish created history when he bagged the first medal for India in gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games. He won a bronze and a silver at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the Asian Games last year. Ashish was not able to make it to the award ceremony organised on August 29 the National Sports Day,as he was attending a camp at London. The awards were given away by President Pratibha Patil.
