Following the demand by the student union, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Thursday decided to award attendance to those students whose attendance had fallen short because of their involvement in student union elections and other extra-curricular activities.
The university where annual examination has just begun does not allow those students to appear in the examination whose attendance is less than 75 per cent in the academic session. But in a special meeting held today, the universitys academic council decided that those students with short attendance would be awarded attendance who were involved in extra-curricular activities like organising or participating in seminars, workshops, educational tours and student union elections.
The special meeting was called on Thursday to consider the proposal of the AMU students union for extending benefits to the students for participating in academic and extracurricular activities in the current session.
The university has decided to award 10 per cent attendance to the students for attending faculty-level workshop,10 per cent attendance for submitting field assignment,10 per cent attendance for involvement in extra-curricular activity and 5 per cent for good conduct during the current session, said university sources.
A maximum of 35 per cent attendance could be awarded to any student. This arrangement is for current session only, said Professor VK Abdul Jaleel,Registrar,AMU.
After this decision,a student who had only 40 per cent attendance could appear in examinations if he had participated in all such activities and had good conduct during the session.
A number of students had participated in students union elections held in January. After that, the student union and university had organised a number of extra-curricular activities including symposiums, conferences and sports event. Lots of students were busy in them and were not able to attend the classes. Such students would be awarded attendance if it falls short, the Registrar said.
The Deans and Head of the Faculties concerned would verify the application if a student claims for this benefit, the Registrar said.
Abu Affan Farooquee, the AMU union president, said next year the union would propose to make this arrangement on a permanent basis.
