ON SATURDAY, the second day of the ongoing all India council meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, it was unanimously decided to firm up a proposal replacing the Urdu terms ‘Shahi’ and ‘Peshwai,’ commonly associated with the Kumbh Mela, with “names rooted in Sanatan Dharma.”

During the three-day meeting, several other resolutions were passed, including a call for enhanced security measures for the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2025 and a directive for akharas to issue identity cards to sants/sadhus for easier identification. The discussions also covered topics such as “love jihad”, cow slaughter and the safety of sants. Additionally, the council urged the government to consider awarding the Bharat Ratna to senior sants in recognition of their contributions to Sanatan Dharma.

Last month, a group of sadhus and seers advocated for changing the term “Shahi Snan” to a name more in line with Sanatan traditions and this matter was brought up for discussion at the Parishad meeting in Prayagraj on Saturday. “Shahi Snan,” or royal bath, signifies the ritualistic bathing of sadhus and devotees in the Sangam, preceded by a grand procession. It is one of the key events of the Kumbh Mela, significant to the sadhu community.

“We discussed that the Urdu terms ‘Shahi’ and ‘Peshwai’ should be replaced with names more aligned with Sanatan Dharma. ‘Shahi’ is commonly used for ‘Shahi Snan.’ We also decided to request the government to ensure adequate security arrangements for all participants, including sants, at the forthcoming Kumbh Mela. Additionally, we stressed the importance of keeping the Kumbh Mela area green and clean,” said Akhara Parishad chairman Mahant Ravindra Puri.

He added that a proposal was put forward to urge the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna to senior sants in recognition of their contributions to Sanatan Dharma.
The three-day meeting is being held at Shri Niranjani Panchayati Akhara in Prayagraj’s Daraganj area and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to attend on the third day (Sunday).

Representatives from all 13 akharas are present at the event.

Mahant Puri also highlighted that other key issues were discussed, including love jihad, the safety of sadhus, the ban on cow slaughter and environmental cleanliness during the Kumbh Mela. “We will present our proposals to the Chief Minister when he participates in the meeting on Sunday,” he added.
To prevent persons from entering the Kumbh Mela under false identities as sadhus, it was decided that all akharas should issue identity cards to their sants for proper identification.
