The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has asked the UP government to provide foolproof security to the university in the light of Swami Aseemanand’s confession.

AMU vice-chancellor Professor P K Abdul Azis on Tuesday wrote a letter to the UP Chief Secretary and Aligarh District Magistrate seeking adequate security for the university, its students, teaching and non-teaching staff and their families .

According to the alleged confession of Swami Aseemanand, the university is one their targets. Swami Aseemanand was arrested by the CBI in Haridwar in Uttarakhand in November last year. He is considered one of the key conspirators in the Malegaon,Mecca Masjid and Ajmer Dargah blast cases.

“AMU is the symbol of Muslim education in India. In the light of newspaper reports that AMU is also a terror target by extremists as revealed by Swami Aseemanand, the university has sought foolproof security for its staff, teachers and students from the government,” said Rahat Abrar,AMU spokesperson.

“The state government should view this reported threat seriously and initiate all security measures,” Abrar said. University authorities said about 16,000 students live in 80 hostels on the campus. Almost 1,000 teaching staff and 4,000 non-teaching staff and their families live on the university campus.

“The university has appealed to all staff and students to be extremely vigilant to insulate the campus from any sort of infiltration by such extremists,” Abrar said.

AMU staff and students have been advised to carry their identity cards on campus and cooperate with the security staff at all entry points. Wardens have been asked to ensure unauthorised persons do not enter hostels. “Inmates have also been asked to not allow any outsider in the hostels and inform the proctorial board if any suspicious person is seen,” Abrar said.
