Aarushi case: Final arguments begin

Dentist couple Nupur and Rajesh Talwar are standing trial for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj

More than five years after the Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj double murder, final arguments in the case began at a sessions court in Ghaziabad on Thursday.

Dentist couple Nupur and Rajesh Talwar are standing trial for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj on the night of May 15-16,2008.

The final arguments began two days after the Supreme Court said the couple had been adopting “dilatory tactics” in an attempt to prolong the trial.

On Thursday, the CBI began arguments in the court of ASJ Shyam Lal. Senior CBI prosecutor R K Saini based the final arguments on the accounts of various witnesses dealing with the nature of injures on both victims, the last-seen theory,as well as the conduct of the Talwars on the morning when Aarushi’s body was discovered.

Saini said,“We explained to the court that the case is one based on circumstantial evidence. Based on the accounts of Dr Sunil Dohre and Dr Naresh Raj,who conducted the post-mortem examinations of Aarushi and Hemraj, respectively,we told the court that the injuries on the heads of both victims were made by a golf club. The slits on the throat could have been made by a surgical scalpel or a knife, both of which were easily available at the Talwars’ residence, the scene of the crime.”

The CBI also referred to the examination conducted by D K Tanwar, scientist of the CFSL,who had said two of the golf clubs used seemed cleaner than the others during examination.
