The Akhilesh Yadav government Thursday appointed 1977-batch IPS officer Arun Kumar Gupta as state’s new Director General of Police (DGP), a month before he retires from service.
Gupta who will attain the age of retirement on January 31, will hold the post of DGP till that date only, unless given an extension.
The post of DGP had fallen vacant after the retirement of A L Banerjee on Wednesday. A native of Delhi, Gupta whose last posting was as DG in Police Recruitment and Promotion Board since August 27, 2014, is the senior most IPS officer of the UP cadre.
Gupta reached the DGP headquarters Thursday evening and took charge from Banerjee.
Gupta had earlier twice lost the race to the post of DGP as the government, overlooking his seniority, appointed 1978-batch officer Rizwan Ahmad as state police chief on December 31, 2013. Ahmad could continue on the post only for two months before his retirement in February, 2014 when he was replaced by Banerjee, a 1979 batch officer.
