A week after the state government issued directives to provide land ownership rights to slumdwellers in the city, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) began awarding the rights to slumdwellers on Saturday. The LDA distributed lease papers, lease plan and identity cards to 110 families in two slums.

Land ownership rights are being given to slum dwellers under the Sarvajan Hitay Garib Awas Malikana Haq Yojna,an ambitious scheme Chief Minister Mayawati had announced on her 53rd birthday on January 15.

Under the scheme, the government will provide land ownership rights to those slumdwellers, who have occupied up to 33 sq m land in slums on undisputed government land. Land is being given to slumdwellers on lease for 90 years. Assistant Engineer of LDA Trilochan Singh said: “Land ownership rights were given to 52 families in Balram Nagar and 58 families in Gudad Basti. Distribution of lease papers will continue in Pakka Taal and Chakmalhauri slums on Monday.”

After a survey of all 530 slums in city, the LDA had shortlisted 2263 dwellers in 23 slums as beneficiaries of the scheme. To extend the benefit of scheme to maximum people, state government had removed the rider of Below Poverty Line card and identity proof. The government had decided to give lease of slums to dweller on February 28 but the scheme was kept on hold till the LS elections were over.

Last week, the state government had directed the development agencies to start distribution of lease papers.

The UP government has charged the beneficiaries of scheme at the rate of Rs 20 per sq m in municipal corporation limit,Rs 15 per sq m in Nagar Palika Parishad area and Rs 10 per sq m in Nagar Panchayat area.
