(Express Photo) A clash took place between members of two communities at Kamlapur village in Sambhal district on Saturday, leaving six persons injured, including two women, police said.
A police team that reached the spot also came under attack. Police arrested 16 people and have deployed additional forces in the village.
“On Saturday afternoon, we received information that two groups of drunk people were making remarks against each other, leading to tension at Kamlapur village. When a police team reached the spot, they found members of the two groups pelting stones at each other and beating their rivals with sticks. When police tried to stop them, the members of both the groups started pelting stones at the police party,” the complaint lodged by Sub-Inspector Basant Yadav read.
The situation came under control when additional police force arrived and used mild force to disperse the crowd, the police said.
Station House Officer (Bahjoi) Pankaj Lavania said the dispute between the two groups were going on in the village for a long time. “The matter accelerated on Saturday when people in an inebriated state allegedly hooted and made remarks on people of other community in the village… A total of 16 people have been arrested in the case and raids are being conducted to trace other accused,” the SHO said, adding an FIR has been lodged against 17 named and 25 unidentified people in the case.
