Badaun police on Friday arrested three of the men who had allegedly attacked the district supply officer and made an attempt to torch his vehicle in Zarif Nagar area yesterday.
DSO Neeraj Singh had sealed a shop after finding its owner selling kerosene illegally, when a mob of locals, led by local block development committee chairperson Neelam Guptas husband Subhash Gupta and shop owner Girish Chandra Gupta, attacked him.
Additional SP (Rural) Sheo Shankar Singh said Girish Chandra Gupta and his nephews Rinku and Tinku had been arrested and efforts are on to trace Subhash Gupta who allegedly provoked the mob.
DSO Neeraj Singh said he had raided Girishs shop following information that he was selling kerosene illegally. He,along with 10 other employees, including regional food officer Sanjay Gangwar, sealed the shop after finding kerosene stored in the shop although Gupta had no license,he said.
Singh also said that he had asked Gupta to open up his godown adjacent to the shop for a search, but he refused. As Singh called up a videographer and was about to break open the godown,Subhash Gupta arrived there with a group of locals.
Subhash and others attacked the DSO and other employees and forced them to leave. The mob smashed the glass of the DSOs car and sprinkled kerosene on the vehicle. They could have torched the car if he had not escaped, said the DSO.
Badaun SP Manzil Saini said that no attempt was made to set the DSO on fire or torch his vehicle. The mob attacked him and his team members and a case under relevant sections of IPC,including attempt to murder, had been registered, she added.
