Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said plans are afoot to open another 2,700 branches in Uttar Pradesh alone in the next one year.
Speaking at an event where 300 bank branches were opened in the state,Chidambaram said: In the last two to three years,we have been opening 6,000 bank branches every year on an average. I am sure that in 2013-14 also,all our banks together will open a very large number of branches. In UP alone,the plan is to open another 2,700 branches. If you are able to do that in UP,you should be able to do at least 10,000 to 12,000 branches all over the country.
The 300 bank branches inaugurated today are a part of opening of the targetted 3000 branches by 2014 March-end.
According to UP Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani,the national average is 13,000 people covered by one bank branch,in Uttar Pradesh,it is one branch per 16,000 people. So,he said,the state needs for bank branches.
He also urged the Centre to look into the states need for external financing to the order of 3.5 billion US dollars through World bank,Asian Development Bank and other external agencies.
He urged the finance minister to release the fund share of UP in all Centrally-sponsored schemes on time in the next financial year so that timely completion of the projects is ensured. We would like to request that capital subsidy and viability gap funding for our expressway project the Agra-Lucknow expressway be provided to us as soon as we submit the project, he said.
