The Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University administration proposes to reduce consultation fees in order to attract patients to the outpatient department of its Centenary Hospital project.
It has been two months since it was inaugurated, but the hospital OPD has seen only four to five patients a day on an average. The varsity administration believes the consultation fee of Rs 300 is a deterrent.
We are planning a reduction in the fee to Rs 50 in order to attract patients and simultaneously strengthen our facilities. As the facilities increase and patients start coming in,we can then increase the consultation fee as per requirement, said Prof JV Singh,Vice-Chancellor.
The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2005. After much delay, the hospital was finally dedicated to the people on January 15,2010,on Chief Minister Mayawatis 54th birthday. However, construction work at the building continued after this.
The OPD became functional on Mayawatis 55th birthday – January 15,2011 – but the opening of the inpatient department, which was to take place in February, had to be postponed again as the modular operation theatres are still not ready.
According to initial plans, the hospital was to have eight modular OTs with 40 pre-operative and around 70 post-operative beds. Over 100 beds in the Intensive Care Units and over 30 high dependability beds with all emergency facilities on the bedside were planned in the first phase, along with diagnostic facilities. The indoor and outdoor facilities were a part of the second phase.
However,as of now, only six modular OTs have been taken up and some beds have been earmarked for pre- and post-operative care. As the building was completed and handed over to the university, the administration decided to use the building and with alterations in the plans, the OPD facilities were started by the then VC Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal.
