13-year-old Kanwariya crushed to death in UP’s Badaun, two pilgrim groups clash
Angry kanwariyas set tractor-trailer on fire, block highway; police say situation now under control

A 13-year-old kanwariya was killed on Friday when a stationary tractor-trolley — under which he was sleeping — rolled over him after being hit by another vehicle carrying kanwariyas in the Ujhani area of Badaun district. The incident triggered a violent clash between two groups of pilgrims.
The victim, identified as Ankit, a resident of Bareilly, was resting in front of the parked tractor-trolley near a roadside eatery when the tragedy occurred.
According to police, a speeding tractor-trolley, also carrying kanwariyas, rammed into the parked vehicle, causing it to move forward and crush the boy. He died on the spot due to critical injuries.
The death led to a heated altercation between the two kanwariya groups. The confrontation escalated into a violent clash involving physical scuffle and stone-pelting. In the chaos, an enraged group set the parked tractor-trolley ablaze. While the vehicle sustained partial damage, a DJ system mounted on it was completely destroyed in the fire.
Police teams arrived promptly and managed to bring the situation under control. The road blockade was lifted, and normal traffic resumed on the Bareilly-Badaun Highway. The Kanwariyas were dispersed and allowed to continue their pilgrimage.
Badaun Circle Officer Devendra Kumar confirmed that the driver of the tractor-trolley responsible for the collision has been arrested. He has been identified as Lalla Babu.
“The situation is now under control,” said the officer, adding that senior police officials also visited the site to oversee the law-and-order response.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Ankit was part of a kanwariya group travelling from Bareilly. The group stopped near a dhaba to rest and eat, while Ankit lay down near the wheel of their parked tractor-trolley. Roughly an hour later, the speeding tractor-trolley collided with their vehicle, resulting in the fatal accident.
