Two students of IIT Kharagpur drowned in a sea in East Midnapore’s Digha where they had gone for a swim Sunday morning, police said.
The two — Rohit Tripathi and Aniruddha Kumar Raju — were accompanied by four of their friends, all fourth-year students of IIT Kharagpur. The group had travelled to New Digha where they decided to go for a swim around 11 am at the Khanika Ghat. When a high tide began, all of them came out of the water, only to find Rohit and Aniruddha missing. “They had gone too far and were washed away,” said an eye-witness.
While Rohit was from Bhopal, Aniruddha hailed from Uttarakhand. Their families have been informed, police said. Teachers and other students of the institute arrived in Digha when they learned of the incident. The bodies were fished out late evening. While Rohit’s body was found near Police Holiday Home Ghat, that of Aniruddha was found at the beach near New Digha-Odisha border.
East Midnapore ACP Zafar Azmal Kidwai said the bodies will be sent for postmortem on Monday. SDPO Indira Mukherjee said they were not ruling out the possibility of any foul play. “Though there does not appear any indication as such, we are not ruling out any possibility. We will be investigating the case from all angles,” she added.
