The CPM and Trinamool Congress men clashed over the closure of a school at Rajarhat during the 24-hour general strike on Tuesday.
CPM cadres allegedly locked the teaching and non-teaching staff members inside Ram Kumar High School at Gopalpur while TMC supporters wanted classes to resume.
Police sources said that when teachers came to the school in the morning, the attendance register was missing.
I asked the teachers to file a general diary with the police station. Later, two separate groups of CPM and TMC supporters gathered at Kali Park More and argued if the school will function today or not. A clash followed. We had a small force but tried to disperse the crowd even as they started pelting us with stones, said DP Pan,Officer-in-charge,Airport Police Station.
When Tapas Chatterjee,chairman,Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality and local MLA Sabyasachi Dutta arrived at the scene, the situation turned worse.
Dutta blamed the CPM. Tapas Chatterjee had gone there with a large number of anti-socials to shut the school down. When I went there, there was utter chaos. Amidst all this, the service revolver of my security officer was snatched and he also got severely injured, he said.
One Shankar Ray (28) was shot at in the thigh and 10 others sustained head injury caused by the brickbat. Ray has been hospitalised.
Later,Bidhannagar Police, led by commissioner Rajiv Kumar, started massive raids in the entire area. The police went to Chatterjees place but could not find him there.
We have detained 25 people and are still looking for people. Duttas bodyguard has been hospitalised with severe injury. His service revolver could not be recovered so far. Tapas Chatterjee has not been arrested yet, said Rajeev Kumar.
CPM leader Gautam Deb visited the spot in the evening.
He said Trinamool Congress was trying to ransack the place where CPM has had a stronghold since the last three and a half decades. He said the person who had been shot was a CPM supporter.
