Rebel Trinamool Congress MP Somen Mitra will resign from the Lok Sabha in January, before joining the Congress,to avoid byelection in his Diamond Harbour constituency. The decision has been taken considering 2014 general elections which are due in May. As per the rule,a seat cant be vacant for more than six months.
I have made it clear that I would quit TMC. I will resign from the post of an MP soon, Mitra said.
He ,however, did not reveal that when he would resign from the party.
According to sources,Mitra has already informed the Congress that he will join the party in January. Somenda does not want to disturb his electorate by forcing them to polling booths in a span of few months. A byelection in March or April won;t make much sense as the general elections may be held in May, a Congress leader said.
Congress general secretary Prof Om Prakash Mishra said,Mitra is a veteran politician and we welcome him. He wont join Congress, before he resigning as MP.
Union minister and a senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhury had eaerlier said Mitra was welcome in Congress if he resigns from his post of MP.
According to sources in Congress,Mitra would bring some other senior TMC leaders along with him. There are some TMC leaders who may not get party ticket for Lok Sabha elections. They may to join Congress before the elections, said a senior Congress leader.
