(Representational image/File)A Trinamool Congress worker was killed because of personal enmity arising out of a land dispute at Baruipur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, police said, adding that 12 people were arrested over the incident.
Saidul Ali Sheikh (36), who was a driver, was allegedly taken to an open field in the Balban area of Madarat panchayat and stabbed multiple times.
“Sheikh was killed due to a land dispute. His family lodged a complaint with the police. We are investigating,” Superintendent of Police Palash Chandra Dhali said.
As per the police, 24 people were named in the complaint. They have not ruled out political motives behind the murder.
According to local sources, after the assault on Saturday night by a few people, Saidul Ali Sheikh was rescued and taken to a hospital in Baruipur, where he died later. As word spread about his death, tension prevailed in the area and the police carried out raids and arrested 12 people.
The ruling Trinamool Congress said that Sheikh was murdered by local goons supported by both the Opposition BJP and the CPM.
“He was a very active leader. The CPM is active in this area and the BJP supports it. There was a conflict between groups over establishing control on a piece of land. People here are very angry over the incident and want stern action against those involved,” said Biman Banerjee, TMC MLA for Baruipur Paschim.
However, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP said, “(Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee and her party have not been able to protect their own people. Look at what happened in Baruipur. Mamata Banerjee is concerned only about her Bhaipoo (referring to her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee).”
