(Representational Image) A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten up by a group of 30 to 40 men in the Hendia area of Khejuri in Purba Medinipur district on Sunday, police said, adding they have started a probe into the incident.
Police said that it has been alleged that attempt was made to pour petrol on him and set him on fire, before local rescued him.
The TMC worker, identified as Narendranath Maji, a resident of Dakshinpalli area in Khejuri, is currently admitted in a hospital at Kanthi.
According to his family, Narendranath and his father were going to police station on Sunday to file a complaint against threats he was allegedly receiving when a group of 30 to 40 people surrounded him and tied him to a tree and started beating him up.
“BJP goons tried to burn TMC worker Naren Maji in Tikashi area of Khejuri, where we won but lost in one booth… He is undergoing treatment. We will visit Khejuri police station on Wednesday.
Before that, let the police arrest the culprits,” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh tweeted on Monday.
The Trinamool (TMC) claimed that the people who attacked Maji were local BJP workers. However, BJP denied the charge, and claimed that the incident was a fallout of a factional war within the local TMC unit. “There is an attempt to link the BJP with the incident. Trinamool won the panchayat polls by a landslide. There is a fight going on among themselves to become the chief. The BJP condemns this incident. BJP does not support this in any way.”
In Purba Medinipur Zilla Parishad, 56 of the 70 seats were won by the Trinamool Congress in the panchayat polls this time. Only 14 seats went to BJP. Out of 223 gram panchayats in the district, 137 are under the control of the ruling party, while BJP has 61.
