The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has formed a new unit of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) — the students’ wing of the party — at Jadavpur University (JU) where the Left students’ outfits play a dominant role in campus politics.

The university has been in the news since last week following the death of a first-year undergraduate student after a fall from the hostel building. Police have so far arrested 12 people, including incumbent and former students of the university, in the murder case. Police suspect it to be a case of harassment and ragging.

A communication issued by the TMC on Friday night stated that Sanjib Pramanick and Rajanya Haldar would be the chairperson and president of the Jadavpur University TMCP unit, respectively. “My aim is to strengthen our unit in JU. Our focus is to create a ragging-free campus and an atmosphere of learning without any obstacles,” said Haldar, who is a resident of Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district and also the TMCP district unit vice-president.
On July 21, Haldar caught the eye of the senior leaders after delivering a fiery speech at the TMC’s Martyr’s Day rally in the city. Since then, she has been taking part in a number of party programmes.

The decision to form a new unit at JU was taken during a meeting attended by ministers Aroop Biswas and Firhad Hakim; TMC MLA Debashish Kumar and other youth leaders of the party on Thursday night.

The decision assumes significance as the TMCP has been vocal against the “ragging culture prevalent in the university” and demanded the installation of CCTVs on the campus to stop such incidents. The TMC students’ wing also organised a sit-in outside the JU campus to condemn the death of the first-year student. By intensifying the protest, the TMCP is trying to look for an entry into JU campus politics where the Left outfits play a dominant role and control all three students’ unions.

On Wednesday, a clash broke out between TMCP and SFI members on the JU campus after the former tried to submit a deputation to the university authorities. Two TMCP members, including Rajanya Haldar, were injured in the attack.

On Saturday, TMCP members, led by Haldar, met JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu and demanded the installation of CCTVs on the campus and hostels. “Today, we managed to meet the JU registrar. She has given us assurance that they would consider our demand. They said that CCTVs would be installed at strategic points on the campus. We will give them 10 days’ time as it takes time to complete the procedure. Till then, we will monitor the situation,” Haldar told mediapersons.
