According to sources, the teams of the I-T Department, accompanied by escorting central armed forces personnel, reached Murshidabad district on Tuesday night for this operation.
The sources said the raids were conducted at different premises owned by Biswas, including his residence, his ‘bidi’ factory and warehouse, private school, and nursing home. No one is being allowed to enter or leave the premises, they added.
Besides conducting the raids, the I-T officials have also started questioning those who supervise the different businesses owned by Biswas.
Sources said the I-T Department officials are probing other businesses that the MLA might also be associated with in addition to those that the department knows about. They added the raid and search operations are expected to continue for an indefinite period.
Biswas was elected as the Left Front-supported Congress candidate in the Sagardighi Assembly bypoll last year. However, he joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in the presence of TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee months after winning the election on a Congress ticket.
Last month, I-T officials had conducted searches at the office of Bishnupur TMC MLA Tanmoy Ghosh, two years after he joined Trinamool following his win on a BJP ticket in 2021.
