Alleged Trinamool Congress cadres beat up a Congress MLA and set fire to 40 houses at Jaipur area in Howrah,hours before the panchayat polls kick off in the state.

Congress leaders alleged that late on Tuesday night,Trinamool cadres entered the village and ransacked and burned houses. They also hurled bombs and beat up people randomly.

Asit Mitra,Congress MLA from Amta,went to the village this morning to take stock of the situation and was beaten up as well. He was hospitalised with injuries on his head,forehead and arm.

“I had gone to meet the people whose houses were burnt. Trinamool people surrounded me and said I would not be allowed to go there. When I said I wanted to visit the houses that had been razed,they showered blows on me. They attacked me with bamboo,sticks and swords and hurled bricks,” Mitra told reporters at the hospital. The attackers intended to kill him,he added.

Tension prevailed in Jaipur area,where police have deployed a large number of forces.

State Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya spoke to state election commissioner Mira Pande about the attack. The party will observe Black Thursday tomorrow to protest against the incident.
