A 15-year-old boy died after he allegedly came under the wheels of a police vehicle at Kulgachi village in the Ranaghat subdivision of Nadia district on Monday night. Two other villagers also reportedly sustained injuries.

The teenager’s death triggered a protest by villagers who alleged that the vehicle carrying a police team, which had come to probe cow theft in the area, suddenly drove away, crushing people on its way.

According to sources, a police team from Dhantala had reached the village on Monday night after villagers caught a person on suspicion of being a cow thief. It has been alleged that when the police team reached the village, they faced angry villagers and started to drive away even as some of the people in the crowd tried to stop them. In the melee, a teenager, identified as Akash Roy (15), came under the police vehicle’s wheels and died. Two others also sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to a hospital in Ranaghat, sources said.

Ranaghat Superintendent of Police K Kannan, who visited the spot on Tuesday, said that the incident is being investigated. “Action will be taken against the culprits. Anyone found involved will not be spared,” the SP said.
