Hundreds of students gathered in front of Bhowanipore Gujarati Education Society on Thursday morning and protested against ambiguity and lack of transparency in the admission process.
The students alleged that the college refused to accept their admission forms and instead demanded a hefty amount as donation for booking a seat in the college.
The college authorities are not even letting us to submit our admission forms. If you pay thousands in donation your seat is booked in the college, said a student, who has secured over 80 per cent marks in the 10+2 examination.
I was asked by a third-year student of the college to arrange for Rs 50,000 as donation to book a seat in the college, said another student. Some students also alleged that girls are being given preference over the boys during the admission process.
The admission process began on May 27 and since then thousands of forms have been sold from the college. Many students have been assured of provisional admission by the Calcutta University. The college authorities, however, insists that the problem lies in the increase in admission seekers.
There is a problem regarding admissions in every college as there are so many students who have passed the examination with good marks. We have to accommodate all the students of our school, students of Gujarati community and those who have sought provisional admissions, said Mangal Das Singhi, the chairman of the college trustee.
He said that the college will admit around 2,300 students this year. Last year, the admission process in the college had run into rough weather. Citing lack of infrastructure and poor strength of faculty, the Calcutta University had directed the college to reduce its intake of students to 300. The college, however, challenged the decision in the Calcutta High Court and got relief.
