Students lock up college teachers

Students of second year Geography department on Tuesday gheraoed about 16 teachers of Bethuadahari College in Nadia district for over five hours demanding that their lab charges of Rs 2,500 be waived.

Krishnagar: Students of second year Geography department on Tuesday gheraoed about 16 teachers of Bethuadahari College in Nadia district for over five hours demanding that their lab charges of Rs 2,500 be waived. Teacher-in-charge of the college,Swapan Kumar Mondal,said second year students of Geography department locked them up at 1.30 pm though the authorities agreed to reduce the amount by Rs 1,000. The teachers,including Mondal,were released at about 6 pm following intervention by the police.

Rahman says sorry for his CM remark

Kolkata: Senior CPM leader Anisur Rahman on Tuesday apologised unconditionally in the Assembly for his obscene comments against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,which he made at Itahar in North Dinajpur in December last year. Rahman’s apology came after a Privilege Motion was moved against him by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee. Asked to reply by Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay,Rahman said his mode of delivery might have been wrong and he had already apologised for his remarks,amidst jeers from the Treasury benches.

Didi says she wants Hills to be happy

Siliguri: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she wished everyone in the Darjeeling Hills and other parts of the state “to be happy and stay together”. Accompanied by North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb and Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy,the Chief Minister arrived in Siliguri on a three-day visit of north Bengal. Though Banerjee refused to answer questions on the GJM-ruled Gorkha Territorial Administration,she said,“There can be political differences,but I wish that everybody in the hills are happy. Not just the hills,I wish everyone in other parts of the state are happy and they stay together.”

Lawyers shout as court hears PIL

Kolkata: Some lawyers shouted slogans inside a court room of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday where Chief Justice Arun Mishra was hearing an PIL. The Bar Association had planned not to appear in the court in the afternoon to attend a condolence meeting of a lawyer,who died in a road accident. The chief justice,however,continued his work and told the lawyers not to shout in the coutroom.

Loba: Petitioner told to move criminal court

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the villagers of Loba,who were allegedly injured in a police firing on November 6,2013,to approach the criminal court. A PIL was filed demanding CBI probe into the alleged police firing at Loba,but the state government claimed in its affidavit that no villagers were injuredin the police firing.
