Students let ‘unwell’ Presidency University V-C leave campus

The call to boycott given by a section of protesting students failed to cast shadow over the convocation ceremony.

Presidency University Saturday held its third convocation amid high drama and presence of heavy police force even as the 26-hour-long gherao of its Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia ended after she was allowed by the protesting students to leave the campus over her deteriorating health.

The students, however, insisted on her resignation. “We decided to let her leave the campus since she was unwell, but our protests will continue. We will continue to occupy the office until she resigns,” Trisha Chanda, general secretary of the students union, said.

The mood at the university campus was divided as many students shouted ‘we want convocation’ while others shouted slogans demanding the V-C’s resignation over alleged police assault on students protesting during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to campus Friday.

During her convocation speech, Lohia said, “We were faced with rather unpleasant incidents in the past 24 hours. But I must say every challenge is an opportunity and my dear faculty and students stood by me and made sure that nothing marred the convocation…”
