Stir derails Tamang probe

The CBI team assigned to probe into the killing of All India Gorkha league leader Madan Tamang and the escape of Nicol Tamang,prime accused in the murder case.

The CBI team assigned to probe into the killing of All India Gorkha league leader Madan Tamang and the escape of Nicol Tamang,prime accused in the murder case,from CID custody,got stranded in Darjeeling because of the GJM agitation there from Tuesday.

“The investigations of the CBI into the two cases have been disrupted due to the present situation,” said Arun Bothra,DIG,CBI,Kolkata.

The CBI would have to file the status report on the investigation of the cases on February 17 according to an order passed on January 20. The CBI officials said it was difficult to continue the investigation there in such a situation.

The CBI set up camp offices at Darjeeling and Siliguri in the third week of January to conduct the probe and the district administration provided logistic support to the agency for the probe. Six officials of the CBI have been confined in the camp set up in a hotel at Darjeeling since Tuesday.

Another team lodged in a camp at Siliguri has not been able to move since Tuesday due to deterioration of law and order situation there. A CBI official told the Indian Express that it was not possible to move during the bandh at Siliguri today.

The CBI team at Darjeeling became anxious after GJM supporters attacked a government vehicle which carried two CBI constables on Tuesday evening at Kurseong. They were rescued later by the Kurseong police.

The CBI took over the Madan Tamang killing case from the state government in the third week of November. Tamang was killed in Darjeeling on May 21 lat year.
