SEC partisan: Trinamool

THE Trinamool Congress has described allegations of attack on candidates of opposition parties while filing nomination for the panchayat elections as “baseless”. Incidents of stray violence were being higlighted and blown out of proportion, said party general secretary Mukul Roy while addressing the media today.

Roy also renewed his party’s attack on the State Election Commissioner, saying she was given an “extension in service” when the Left Front was on its way out of the state.

He accused the SEC of acting in a “partisan” manner against the ruling government. “The SEC is paying its guru dakshina for having got an extension in service,” alleged Roy without naming Meera Pandey.

Will gherao SEC if violence don’t stop: BJP

BJP’s state unit has said it would gherao the State Election Commission (SEC) if instances of violence did not stop or were not dealt with strongly. “Why did the SEC issue notification for the panchayat elections if it was not fully satisfied with the law and order situation?” asked state BJP president Rahul Sinha on Saturday.

He referred to an SEC circular stating that candidates of entire Burdwan,East Midnapore and Pashkura, and parts of Hooghly,Canning and Bhangore in South 24-Parganas can submit their nomination papers at the block development office as well as the sub-division officer and district magistrate’s office. “We say the rule should be implemented in the entire district and not only at these handful blocks,” he said.

He also said the SEC should call an all-party meeting to address the problem.
