Schools stay closed

Almost all the schools in the city remained closed on Tuesday to mourn the death of State Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty.

Almost all the schools in the city remained closed on Tuesday to mourn the death of State Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty.

The school education department had sent a circular in this regard: “All government and state-aided schools are requested to keep the institutions closed on August 4 as a mark of respect to the departed soul of Subhas Chakraborty”.

Although the circular was not binding on Christian Missionary schools,many like St James,Pratt Memorial,St Thomas School chose to remain closed.

The West Bengal Board of Madrasah Education also postponed the compartmental and external examinations scheduled between August 4 and 6.

The University of Calcutta had declared a half day on August 3,but suggested that the colleges would take a final call. Although universities and colleges remained open on Tuesday,the attendance was low. The University of Calcutta,however,held the BA,BSc and BCom part II examinations as scheduled.
