A special team of CID on Friday raided Rs 5.15 lakh from the government residence of former CPM minister Sushanta Ghosh in south Kolkata. The CID,which had earlier conducted raids at the ancestral houses of Ghosh in Benachapra in Garbeta and at Chandarkona Road in West Midnapore district, today raided the MLA’s official address with the help of Kolkata Police. Three mobile phones, two bank passbooks and seven diaries were also seized by the CID.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been filed. The case against Ghosh has been registered at Alipore police station as the amount of seized money was beyond the legal limit of cash that can be kept in a household, said a senior CID official. We have started investigating into illegal properties of Sushanta Ghosh. We will also probe into the bank accounts and the transactions of the account, added the official. The flat has been sealed again.
Meanwhile,a CID team led by DIG (CID) K Jayaraman searched areas in Benachapra and Khetua villages for clues in the skeleton recovery case. Divers scoured a pond near Ghosh’s ancestral house, sources said. Two locals — Madan Santra and Kalidas Choudhury — accompanied the CID team.
Santra, who formerly belonged to the CPM and later switched over to the Trinamool Congress was earlier arrested by the CID for inconsistency in his statement.
A team from the state forest department has also been sent to Chandrakona Road to probe whether Ghosh’s Chandrakona residence encroached the forest land.
