Violence rocked two colleges one in Kolkata and the other in its suburbs on Tuesday when clashes between two groups left several students injured.
A scuffle between the supporters of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCCP) and SFI in citys Ashutosh College left two students injured. Clashing students also blocked Hazra Road affecting the traffic movement.
The TMCCP supporters said the trouble began when they went to the college to put up a poster for inviting students to a convention, but the students of the SFI objected to it and created a ruckus leading to the clashes.
But an SFI supporter alleged that the TMCCP supporters often bring outsiders to the college premises to create ruckus. Later,SFI supporters protested in front of Bhowanipore police station.
According to college principal Dipak Kar,the students have also submitted a deputation to the police.
We will sit down with the students on Wednesday and talk to them about the issue, said Kar. He added that a disciplinary committee would probe the matter.
To prevent similar incidents in future, the college authorities have decided to prepare a fresh code of conduct for the students.
In another incident, supporters of the same students groups clashed at Rishi Bankim Chandra College in Naihati. Six students were injured in the scuffle. The clashes began over alleged irregularities in the admission procedure. According to an SFI supporter,a student whose name did not feature in the merit list came to the union room on Tuesday and asked if he could be granted admission.
When he was refused by the SFI,the candidate went to seek help from the TMCCP supporters. Later, they came and beat us up. They wanted to know why the student had been refused admission, said an SFI supporter.
The TMCCP supporters, however, claimed that the SFI students and their supporters were responsible for the irregularities in the admission process to which they had objected to. The police had to be called in to disperse the students.
