Report says 8-yr-old was raped before strangulation

The accused, a 60-year-old ‘tantrik’ named Ratan Das, was lynched by angry villagers.

The preliminary medical reports have suggested that the eight-year-old girl who was found hanging from a neem tree Thursday morning was raped before she was strangulated.

The incident took place at Nandakumar area in East Midnapore district.

The girl was missing since Wednesday evening.

The accused, a 60-year-old ‘tantrik’ named Ratan Das, was lynched by angry villagers and two of his accomplices were also severely beaten up. They were rescued by the police  and are still critical.

Superintendent of Police, East Midnpaore, Sukesh Jain said, “The preliminary medical reports have suggested that the victim was raped. We are yet to receive the autopsy report of the victim, though. We are yet to take the statements of two accused who are still critical and undergoing treatment.” Police are posted in hospital for protection of the two accused. Security is also deployed in the village.

Police have started a case of rape and murder against the accused on the complaint lodged by the victim’s father and a case of lynching has been registered against unknown villagers.
