Red alert for multiple North Bengal districts, Kolkata expected to receive light to moderate rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday issued a red alert (take action) for rain in North Bengal districts like Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Kalimpong. Whereas, Darjeeling and Coochbehar have been put under an Orange alert (be prepared).

“Moderate flash flood risk likely over a few watersheds & neighbourhoods of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts of North Bengal during the next 24 hours,” IMD stated in a special bulletin.

The weather department has issued a Yellow alert (be aware) for all South Bengal districts, which are likely to experience thunderstorms with gusty wind (30-40 kmph) accompanied by moderate rain at isolated places.

Kolkata is expected to have a cloudy and humid day, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Saturday was 30.8 degree Celsius and the minimum was 26.8 degree Celsius. The maximum relative humidity was 98 per cent, and the minimum was 81 per cent.

In its extended forecast, the IMD said Kolkata was likely to continue receiving light to moderate rain over the next few days, with chances of thunderstorms at most places in the city.
