Posing as taxmen,robbers in Kolkata flee with Rs 2 cr

Three persons posing as Income Tax officers today barged into an apartment in Beleghata in north Kolkata and decamped with Rs 2 crore.

Three persons posing as Income Tax officers today barged into an apartment in Beleghata in north Kolkata and decamped with Rs 2 crore.

According to an officer at the Beleghata Police Station,three middle-aged persons entered the residence of one Tarachand Daptari at 74 Hemchandra Naskar Road around 2.30 pm.

“Dressed in formal outfits,they claimed they were IT officers. They opened a cupboard and took out around Rs 2 crore in cash. Daptari and his three daughters were not present at home. The miscreants gave a fake seizure list to Manju Daptari,wife of Tarachand. In the seizure list,it was stated that Rs 90 lakh were seized from his residence,” said a police officer.

According to sources,Daptari runs a cable and transformer oil business

and has his office called TTD Industries at 1,Ganesh Chandra Avenue. He supplies transformer oil to CESC and WBSEB. On April 11,he sold a house in Phoolbagan area in north Kolkata for Rs 2 crore. On April 12,he received the cash and kept the money at his residence.

“They did not give me any chance to speak. When I tried to stop them from opening my cupboard,they asked me not to obstruct Income Tax officers from doing their work. I was told the police are waiting downstairs and if I stop them,I will be arrested. Giving me a seizure list,they left the place. I informed my husband about the matter. Our I-T consultant told us the seizure list is fake and we informed the police,” said Manju.

“We are investigating why this huge amount was kept in the house. An insider could be involved,” said a police officer.
