Police: Civic volunteers can’t take part in law & order work
In the recent past, some cases came to light in which civic volunteers became the accused.

(Express Photo)THE WEST Bengal Police Directorate has issued an order saying that civic volunteers would not be allowed to participate in the law and order and crime-related work of the police force. The order was issued on March 21 in accordance with a Calcuitta High Court directive.
The order said, “You are again apprised that the Civic Volunteer Force is set up to assist police in respective units for traffic management. They will assist police in major festivals. They will assist police regarding unauthorised parking of vehicles. They will assist police in ensuring public safety.”
The order mentioned that civic volunteers can assist police in any other duties/ responsibilities relating to public assistance to be assigned by respective heads of unit.
The order added, “A civic volunteer can not be entrusted with any law enforcement duties. In view of the above, you are requested to abide by the court’s order in letter and spirit.”
