The West Bengal Pollution Control Board has thanked all political parties for abiding by its green regulations issued on March 3 and making this Assembly election one of the most environment friendly polls.
The regulations curbed the use of microphones,suggested use of vehicles with less emission,urged parties to use green generators,refrain from using plastic and instead use cloth or paper,not to hold meetings in childrens parks and spare trees while putting up flags,banners and posters.
A letter from the office of the state pollution watchdog to all parties took note that they tried to check visual and noise pollution during electioneering.
We have thanked all political parties for abiding by our rules. However,we have also pointed out that flags,banners or festoons should be either reused or recycled, said Biswajit Mukherjee,law officer and spokesperson of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
The state pollution watchdog also praised the initiative of some candidates to reuse and recycle plastic hoardings and banners.
Fuad Halid,son of Bengal Assembly Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim and candidate from Ballygunge Assembly segment,has removed 500 flakes in his constituency and donated it to NGO Anubhab,which in turn will give them to Sunderbans residents to make shelters for the monsoon.
Shashi Panja,Trinamool candidate from Shyampukur Assembly segment in Kolkata,has also removed about 150 flakes in her Assembly segment. We have removed the flakes so that they can be recycled, said Panja.
