Op Green Hunt to help CPM,says Mamata

The war of words between Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over the Maoist issue continued on Friday, with both parties taking a dig at each other.

The CM reiterated his allegation that the Trinamool Congress was hand-in-glove with the Maoists, which irked his arch-rival. “We are not Maoists but are nationalists,” said Banerjee.

According to the CM,Operation Green Hunt, launched to crush the Maoists, was being revamped. Speaking to mediapersons,Bhattacharjee said: “I will not tell you the details but I can tell you that the whole operation is being revamped.”

Banerjee’s barb was triggered by the comment made by the chief minister in New Delhi. “Whenever I meet Union Home Minister P Chidambaram I tell him about the relation between the Trinamool Congress and the Maoists and he seems to be unhappy about it,” the chief minister told mediapersons in New Delhi on Friday.

In Kolkata, meanwhile,Banerjee alleged that Operation Green Hunt was being conducted just to help CPM regain their lost ground in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas. “The CPM has set up at least 200 camps in that area. Why are they being allowed to stay?” she said.

“A large number of arms and ammunition is being smuggled from other states. Many of them are being grabbed by the CPM. In fact, the whole operation is being done to help CPM,” she added.

Interestingly, two hours after a meeting with a Congress delegation comprising senior leaders Subrata Mukherjee and Pradip Bhattacharya to discuss, among other things, the civic poll alliance,Banerjee revised her stand on Operation Green Hunt and said she was not against it.

“We are not against the operation as such but the way it is being conducted,” said Banerjee. Banerjee said her party will launch a statewide protest after April 12 when the school examinations in the state would be over. “People are going through a harrowing time. Along with the price rise, people also have to face this menace of powercuts,” said Trinamool chief.
