The recently-released teaser of Randeep Hooda-starrer ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ has stoked a controversy by claiming that the Hindutva ideologue was an inspiration to freedom fighters like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and Khudiram Bose.

A day after it was dropped, the teaser drew sharp reactions from Netaji’s kin who accused the makers of the film of “distorting history”. Talking to IEBangla, Netaji’s grand nephew Chandra Kumar Bose said, “Netaji and Savarkar’s ideologies were polar opposite. This (the film) is an attempt to distort history. It will pass on wrong facts to today’s generation. How did the censor board allow this? This is causing serious harm (to India’s history) by disseminating wrong information.”

Chandra Bose said Subhash Chandra Bose, in his unfinished autobiography Indians struggle, had clearly mentioned that “nothing can be expected from Mr Savarkar and Md. Ali Jinnah”. “After reading that, how can I even claim that Netaji was friends with Savarkar?” On another instance, Bose had written: “Nothing can be expected from Hindu Mahasabha or Muslim League”, Chandra Bose stated.

“I don’t know from where did the makers get this version of the history (that claimed Netaji was inspired by Savarkar),” Chandra Bose rued. Not only Netaji, but even Bhagat Singh or Khudiram Bose were far from being inspired by Savarkar, beleives Chandra Bose. “Both Bhagat Singh and Khudiram Bose were left leaders, but Savarkar was a rightist.” “Netaji might have met Savarkar once, but that doesn’t prove his support towards Savarkar’s ideology,” Bose said, adding that the two people who truely inspired Netaji were Swami Vivekananda and Deshbandhu Chittaranjan. “Swami Vivbekananda was his spiritual guru while Chittaranjan was his political mentor,” Bose stated.

The makers of Savarkar’s biopic unveiled the teaser on May 28. Actor Randeep Hooda, who will be playing the titular role in the film, on the same day took to Twitter to share it. “The most wanted Indian by the British. The inspiration behind revolutionaries like – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh & Khudiram Bose. Who was #VeerSavarkar? Watch his true story unfold!” he wrote.
