Asha Bhonsle tells us why Tagore is relevant even today

More than 15 years after she lost RD Burman,Asha Bhonsle still looks wistful when his name is mention. But she has definitely moved on. “My Bengali has become very rusty. When Pancham was alive,I would speak to him in Bengali, but now I hardly get to speak the language,” says Bhonsle, who was in the city to perform Rabindra Sangeet at the Science City this Sunday to celebrate the Bard’s 149th birth anniversary.

Yet,those who heard Bhonsle sing at the concert wouldn’t really vouch for that. Bhonsle is as comfortable singing Tagore’s song as she ever was. His songs are close to her heart because she feels that Tagore’s poetry is relevant even today. “His works defy time. They speak the language of all our hearts,no matter how disparate we are. What else can one say about such a great man,” she says.

As far as her connection with the city is concerned, she is more forthcoming. “I’m here after a long time and it feels good to be back. Kolkatans have always treated me as one of their own and I respect their love and affection,” she says.
