Trinamool general secretary Mukul Roy met the Pirzaada of Furfura Sharif — a mazar in Hooghly district — at his residence in the district on Saturday night.
Furfura Sharif is a much-respected shrine for Bengali Muslims. When contacted, its Pirzaada Taha Siddiqui said it was a shrine where people, irrespective of his religion, visit. “People of all religions come here to seek blessings. But I am strictly against people who do politics of religion,” he added.
Asked about the Saradha scam probe, Siddiqui said the CBI was doing its job and truth must prevail. “I respect the CBI. Let it do its job. I will be very happy when the offenders are punished and investors who had lost crores, get their money baack. I am waiting for that day when justice will be served,” he said.
Asked about his trip, Roy had told mediapersons on Saturday night that was nothing new in his visit. “I often come here. I am going through a phase now and have come to seek blessings, like everyone else,” he said.
Meanwhile, Roy — the erstwhile right-hand man of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — whose Sunday routine included a visit to the party chief’s Kalighat residence for an informal meeting with the CM and other senior leaders, on Sunday skipped the meet. Instead, he came to Nizam Palace — his office in Kolkata — and spent some time there.
However, while leaving his office, Roy said: “I am the founder general secretary of the party. Why should I distance myself from the party?… I will campaign for the upcoming Bongaon and Krishnagunj bypolls.”
The senior Trinamool leader, who was recently grilled by the CBI in connection with the Sharada scam, will leave for Delhi on Monday.
