Ketan Desai is all set to revive his father Manmohan Desais famous banner
Years ago,Manmohan Desai popularised the genre of masala movies which had the Indian masses asking for more. Amar Akbar Anthony,Naseeb,Coolie,Dharam Veer and Sachcha Jhoota are some of his formula-driven films that continue to enthrall audiences even now. And if his son Ketan has his way,the late filmmakers brand of cinema would continue to enjoy mass appreciation.
Ketan is all set to revive his late fathers banner MKD,by the end of this year. Though he plans to make masala films,Ketan also wishes to experiment with niche topics. Masala films are still a huge draw. But the audience is a bit more demanding today. We cannot merely narrate linear stories, there has to be something edgy too, he says.
The MKD banner continued to make films even after the demise of the filmmaker in 1994,but without much success. Their last film was the Salman Khan-starrer Yeh Hai Jalwa in 2002,which proved to be a box office dud. After that,I went overseas and studied the film market there. I hadnt shut down the office. We had just stopped producing or directing films, says Ketan.
Ketan has got his writer Amit Khan to work on a few scripts while his friend Viveck Vaswani has penned couple of stories for his banner. One script is a comedy, the other is a story based on the film industry, tentatively titled Diva. It will have a lot of guest appearances by industry bigwigs, says Vaswani,a childhood friend of Ketan. Vaswani, who will work as a consultant with Ketan,is happy with the revival plans. The big banners should make a comeback since there have been too many corporate companies taking over film production, he says.
