The Left Front has decided to protest the Centre’s alleged deliberate attempt to stop funding for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to West Bengal, which will coincide with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s two-day sit-in over the same issue in Kolkata.

During a press meet on Friday, Left Front chairman Biman Bose announced that the Left Front would stage protests across the state on March 28, 29 and 30 against “the Centre’s deliberate attempt to stop funds to the state to discontinue the social welfare schemes in West Bengal”.

“The Narendra Modi government is depriving the poor people of the state who get work under the MGNREGA scheme. There was no budgetary allocation in the Union Budget for West Bengal. If there were any irregularities in the accounts of the MGNREGA, then the guilty must be punished. But why is MGNREGA work coming to a standstill?” asked Basu.
