Maoists shot two people dead at Belpahari in West Midnapore late on Saturday evening. According to the police,Karan Murmu and Lal Murmu were killed at Shankhabhanga area of Belpahari forest region.
Both victims were supporters of a local political outfit,Jharkhand Party (Aditya). We have not yet been able to arrest anyone but investigations are on, said N S Nigam,West Midnapore DM.
Both deceased were involved in anti-Maoist activities and became targets of the Naxalites,said a police officer.
The police found the bodies when they were conducting search in the forests.
The state government launched a massive security operation in June to flush out Maoists from Lalgarh in West Midnapore,which they had declared a free zone since last November.
Despite the nearly two-month long operation,however,Maoist activities have continued unabated,and several members of the ruling CPM,activists of other political outfits and tribals have been killed.
