Soni Sori, the tribal teacher from Chhattisgarh and the alleged conduit between the Essar Group and Maoists, was kept in a police lock-up for almost 24 hours in Kolkata before getting admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital for health check-up. Sori was brought to Kolkata for a medical check up in accordance with the Supreme Courts October 21 order as she had alleged torture by Chhattisgarh Police following her arrest.
However, her stay in police lock up has enraged civil rights groups who have termed it as a violation of the apex courts order.
She (Sori) was kept in police lock-up for almost 24 hours. We fear that she was again interrogated by Kolkata Police in the lock-up. This is a clear violation of the Supreme Court order, said Rangta Munshi, secretary of Association of People’s Democratic Rights.
Gautam Navlakha, who had petitioner in support of Sori termed it illegal. We have been informed that Sori has been kept in police custody for almost a day. She is supposed to be kept in the jail and Kolkata Police should have arranged for her stay in the jail custody, Navlakha said.
Another social activist Himanshu Kumar alleged police could have mentally tortured her further. This is against the SC order and against law. She is not in police remand, said Kumar.
Kolkata Police, however, tried to pass the blame to Chhattisgarh Police. Rajiv Kumar,ACP,Special Task Force of Kolkata Police, said,Soni Sori was brought to Kolkata for a medical test and she is not under the STF. She has been brought here by Chhattishgarh Police.
Meanwhile,on Tuesday afternoon Sori was escorted to NRS Hospital. A board of six doctors has been formed to conduct the check-up and provide medical treatment to her. As directed by the Supreme Court, the doctors will submit its report in a sealed envelope to the court.
Police sources said that Chhattishgarh Police wanted to take Soni along with them today, but the hospital authorities refused to release Sori . She is currently admitted in the hospital.
