Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday condemned the brutal murder of American-Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy in Dhaka, saying everyone has the freedom of speech and expression.
“I strongly condemn the murder. There is no language to express our sympathies for the family members of the deceased. We believe all should have an equal right to freedom of expression,” she said at a felicitation ceremony during the Charukala Utsav at Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata.

Roy, an American citizen of Bangladeshi origin, was the founder of a popular blog, muktamona.com. He was hacked to death allegedly by Islamic extremists in Dhaka on February 26 when he was returning from a book fair with his wife Rafida Ahmed Bannya. While he died, his wife was injured in the attack.
The 42-year-old engineer, who had described himself as the defender of free thought in Bangladesh, had received threats on the social media because of his alleged books and blogs against Islam.
Mamata had visited Bangaldesh on February 19 on a three-day trip.
