With the state police failing to file chargesheet even after 90 days since he was booked,PCAPA chief Chhatradhar Mahato was granted bail in four non-bailable cases by the Jhargram ACJM court on Thursday.

With the state police failing to file chargesheet even after 90 days since he was booked,PCAPA chief Chhatradhar Mahato was granted bail in four non-bailable cases by the Jhargram ACJM court on Thursday.

With this,Mahato has got bail in 17 and discharged in one of the 21 cases filed against him.

Among the three remaining cases, the police and CID have submitted chargesheet in two.

According to a senior police officer,Mahato is likely to be released from jail custody.

“Chhatradhar Mahato will be produced in Jhargram court on January 8. Today,he has been granted bail in four non-bailable cases. Police could not file chargesheet in the cases and no evidence was submitted against him,” said Kaushik Sinha,Mahato’s counsel.

According to Sinha,Mahato was granted bail in cases where he was accused of abduction and attempt to murder on CPM leader Mohan Singh; holding meeting at Lalgarh’s Kumarbandh with arms and explosives for waging a war against the state; for setting the Ramgarh police station on fire and holding meet with Maoists in his residence and conspiring against the state.

A senior district police officer said,“It is very unfortunate that Mahato has been granted bail in a majority of cases. If it continues, then he might slip out of our hands. We have tried our best to substantiate the cases but there were some difficulties.”
