Kolkata: Youth throws acid on girl, held

Dinda, a youth hailing from the neighbouring Balakrouth village, reportedly wanted to marry Paromita, which she had refused.

In the morning, there were celebrations at Paromita’s house as she secured 401 marks in the Higher Secondary examinations, the results of which were declared on Friday.

Around 11 pm, Dinda entered Paromita’s bedroom on the first floor of the house — where she was sleeping with her mother and brother — and threw acid on her. The family had kept the bedroom door open because of the hot weather, which Dinda took advantage of.

While Paromita sustained severe injuries, her mother — who reportedly saw Dinda fleeing the house — and brother too received minor burns. The three were admitted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. While Paromita’s condition is stated to be serious, her mother and brother were released after treatment.

“The victim had named the accused and accordingly, he was arrested today and is being interrogated. A friend of the accused has also been detained for questioning. The victim has also said that she had an affair with the accused,” West Midnapore SP Bharati Ghosh said.

“The accused will be produced before the court tomorrow and we will ask for a police custody,” she added and claimed that it was yet to be ascertained whether he had committed the crime.
