Rum on a Metro
It was quite an experience for two persons who were stopped from carrying a bottle of liquor by the security personnel deployed at Rabindra Sarobar Metro station. When the two persons who were told that they would not be allowed to board the train with bottle of liquor, they asked the people at the ticket counter: “Sir,we have come staright from the airport and have not even checked into a hotel. Why is it a problem carrying the bottle with us?” To which one of the metro staff replied: “It is inflammable,” and then quickly asked: “Anyway, what do you have in the bottle?”. “Rum,” replied one of the two men. But the conversation didn’t end there, the Metro staff then told them: “Eto gorome rum khaben keno (Why will anybody want to drink rum in this heat?).” “Leave the bottle behind,” he ordered. The man now visibily irritated retorted by saying that it was no one’s business what he drank. To which the miffed metro staff replied,“If you could afford a flight, you could hire a taxi too. There’s no need to take the Metro.”

Mayor’s last hitch
After being defeated in the KMC election,Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya attended his office for the last time on June 3. He was there to clear some of the pending files. Also present in his chamber were contractors of several private agencies who were assigned to execute the developmental projects. Several contractors wanted to make the outgoing mayor certify them for the job they have done,as they fear that the new Trinamool board will cancel all the existing contracts and instead award it to “their own people.” But Bhattacharya refused to accede to their request. To add to his misery, some of senior civic engineers also urged him to do so. An irate mayor,at last, ordered his staff not to allow any contractor to enter his office.

A nightingale in Didi
Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee liking for music was even reflected amid the celebration of her thumping victory in the muncipal polls. After the results were out,she had a hectic day with celebrations and media briefings. In the evening she was invited to a wedding party, where she, surprise surprise, sang songs. With her party leaders joining her,it soon turned into a chorus. She even flaunted an iPod she had. Even in her apartment in Delhi, she has installed a synthesiser and makes it a point to ask the guests — be it anyone — to sing songs.

Left joking
When the news of the Left Front’s defeat from several districts started pouring, rumours started doing the rounds that a section of Left allies may join hands with the Trinamool Congress. In fact, there were reports that certain leaders are keeping close contacts with Mamata Banerjee. But with the Trinamool winning the polls with a landslide,it became evident that she alone could take on the CPM even without the help of Congress. Amid this,a Left Front leader’s leader joke has become very popular among the Marxists. The joke is — A Left Front leader’s latest feeling: “Now,we feel no Left party could join the Trinamool because there will be no vacancy for the newcomers.”

Why Dalmiya is smiling
A change of guard at the KMC has made most of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) members happy. CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya have never seen eye to eye and the sports body’s relation with KMC dipped to an all time low during Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya’s reign as mayor. Bhattacharya is known to be close to the chief minister. With the Eden Gardens scheduled to host four World Cup matches next year, the CAB bigwigs are happy that they now will have a “friendly” KMC to work with. “We welcome the change,” said a CAB official.
